Beyond Rescue is a San Francisco dog rescue that runs on zero paid staff and zero kennels. It’s 100% volunteer-run and 100% foster-based, which means no shelter building eating the budget and no salaries to cover. Every dollar goes to the dogs: their vetting, their food, their training, their spay and neuter. People ask how a rescue operates that way, and the honest answer is that everyone does a bit of everything. It’s not far from running a small real estate practice, where the job is whatever the day puts in front of you.

That’s how I ended up wearing more than one hat. I serve on the Board of Directors, I foster dogs in my own home, I coordinate volunteers, and I sit on the fundraising committee. None of that is a title collection. In an all-volunteer rescue the roles just stack up, because the work needs doing and the people who show up are the people who do it. Fostering is the part that ruins you in the best way. You take in a scared dog, watch them figure out they’re safe, then hand them to the right family and start over.

Beyond Rescue focuses on keeping dogs out of crisis before it starts, with surrender prevention, rehoming help, adoption matchmaking, and spay and neuter funding for San Francisco families who need it. The promise underneath all of it is simple: any dog who comes into our care never ends up homeless again. You can meet the dogs and read the full mission at Beyond Rescue. And because I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t ask… if any of this moves you, you can donate to Beyond Rescue directly. It all goes to the dogs. That’s the point.
