FREE TOILETS!!! Hurry—Time Is Running Out!

How did I not know about this? Probably because all my bills are on autopay and I avoid opening my mail like it’s a jury duty notice. But the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) is giving away FREE TOILETS!!! Yes, FREE TOILETS!!! And not just the toilet itself—they’ll even install it for free with a licensed plumber.

WHEN: Well, I don’t know when they’ll install it or if they’ll approve you, but you won’t know either unless you apply! The application deadline is MARCH 7, 2025—so if you want in, now’s the time to make a move.

WHERE:

Um, your home. Even renters can get in on this, as long as you have written approval from the owner.

WHY: Because old toilets are water-wasting monsters, and The City is on a mission to conserve water. If you have an older toilet, it’s not just flushing water—it’s flushing money. Plus, if you’re thinking about selling your home, you’ll need to replace that outdated toilet before closing anyway. Why not do it now while it’s FREE!!!

HOW:

  1. You must have an active residential SFPUC water account.

  2. Your current toilet must flush at 1.6 gallons per flush (gpf) or higher. If your toilet was installed before 2014, it probably qualifies.

  3. You’ll also get free water-efficient showerheads and faucet aerators. Because The City really, really wants you to use less water.

  4. If you're a tenant, you'll need your landlord's permission. (So, maybe ask them now.)

  5. Apply before March 7, 2025.

💦 Apply here: SFPUC FREE TOILET PROGRAM!!!

Heads up: If your bathroom floor is rotted or your plumbing is a mess, you might not qualify until you fix those issues. So if you live in a pre-1906 earthquake survivor with “quirky” plumbing, you may need to do some upgrades first.

FREE TOILETS!!! But Only If You Apply in Time.

Seriously, go apply now. Whether you’re looking to cut water costs, upgrade before selling, or just enjoy the thrill of getting something free in San Francisco, this is a rare win. And you don’t want to be that person who realizes they missed out on FREE TOILETS!!! because they waited too long.
